Probe into Rapper Slim Dunkin's fatal shooting continues

Atlanta police Saturday continued to investigate the shooting death of rapper Slim Dunkin, who was gunned down in a Memorial Drive recording studio Friday after possibly getting into an argument with another person. .

Dunkin, whose real name is Mario Hamilton, 24, was  rushed to Grady Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Atlanta Police Major Keith Meadows said Saturday there have been no arrests and “we’re still talking to people, but the truth is we don’t know exactly what happened.” Meadow said  13 to 20 people were in the building when the shooting occurred, around 5:30 p.m.

Investigators were still piecing together the sequence of events.  Meadows said that Hamilton got into a "verbal altercation"  before the video shoot and the person he was arguing with pulled out a pistol and shot Hamilton once in the chest.

Meadows said Saturday it's not clear whether the argument was over the video.

"Right now we're just trying to....identify who may have seen what, really just trying to put the pieces of the puzzle together," Meadows said. "It seems everybody witnessed something very different. We're just trying to go back and make sense of everything."

Police have not recovered the handgun that was used.

Hamilton, who lives in metro Atlanta, was an emerging rap star with growing connections in the industry. Music news website HipHopDX reported Saturday Dunkin was a childhood friend of Waka Flocka Flame and appeared on Gucci Mane and Waka's "Ferrari Boyz" album released over the summer.

Another industy website, TheBoomBox, reported that the Brick Squad affiliate was to appear in the "Push Ups" video for Mane and V-Nasty when he was shot.

Fans posted a memorial Facebook page, “Rest In Peace Slim Dunkin,” where comments were posted Saturday.

“Life is so cruel, people don't give a dam [sic] about no one not even themselves, you got people crying, because people are dying," read one. Read another: " “It shows you that you can't trust a soul on this planet one min you with that person next you at there funeral."

Barry Bonds gets 30-day home sentence -- at worst

SAN FRANCISCO—Eight years of being investigated for steroid allegations ended for home run king Barry Bonds on Friday with a 30-day sentence to be served at home. No more -- and maybe less.

U.S. District Judge Susan Illston immediately delayed imposing the sentence while Bonds appeals his obstruction of justice conviction. The former baseball star was found guilty in April not of using steroids, but of misleading grand jurors.

Even without prison time, the case has left its mark on the seven-time National League MVP. His 762 career home runs, and 73 homers in 2001, may forever be seen as tainted records, and his ticket to baseball's Hall of Fame is in doubt.

Bonds declined to speak in court. Well-wishers hugged the 47-year-old in the hallway courtroom after the hearing was over, and a smattering of fans cheered him as he left the courthouse. It was a marked departure from his initial court appearance four years ago, when guards had to clear a path for Bonds to get through dozens of onlookers to his SUV.

"Whatever he did or didn't do, we all lie," said Esther Picazo, a fan outside the courthouse. "We all make mistakes. But I don't think he should've gotten any kind of punishment at all."

Bonds was sentenced to two years of probation, 250 hours of community service, a $4,000 fine and 30 days of home confinement. It will take time to determine whether he serves any of it; his appellate specialist, Dennis Riordan, estimated it would take nearly a year and a half for the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals to rule.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Matthew Parrella called the sentence a "slap on the wrist" and the fine "almost laughable" for a superstar athlete who made more than $192 million for playing baseball.

Parrella had sought 15 months in prison and argued that home confinement wasn't punishment enough "for a man with a 15,000-square-foot house with all the advantages." Bonds lives in a six-bedroom, 10-bath house with a gym and swimming pool.

"The defendant basically lived a double life for decades before this," Parrella said. He ripped Bonds not only over performance-enhancing drugs but over his personal life: "He had mistresses throughout his marriages."

Parrella said Bonds made lots of money due in part to his use of performance enhancers and that he has been "unrepentant" and "unapologetic" about it.

Illston said none of that had any bearing on Bonds' sentencing.

She said she agreed with a probation department report that called Bonds' conviction an "aberration" in his life. She said she received dozens of letters in support of Bonds, some discussing how he has given money and time "for decades" to charitable causes.

Bonds is the last -- and highest-profile -- defendant in the government's investigation of the Bay Area Laboratory Co-Operative, or BALCO, a steroids distribution ring. The ex-slugger has long denied knowingly using performance-enhancing drugs.

Illston said she was compelled to give Bonds a sentence similar to the two she meted out to other figures convicted after trial of lying to the grand jury and federal investigators about their connection to steroids.

The case against Bonds after he testified before the grand jury Dec. 3, 2003. Prosecutors revised his original 2007 indictment several times and spent a year unsuccessfully appealing a key evidentiary ruling before jurors deadlocked in April on three of the four remaining charges related to his grand jury testimony.

On the final charge, the trial jury convicted Bonds of purposely answering questions about steroids with rambling non sequiturs in an attempt to mislead the grand jury.

"I think he probably got off a little easy," said Jessica Wolfram, one of the jurors who convicted Bonds of obstruction. "He was just so clearly guilty, so I actually am happy he got sentenced to something."

Wolfram said she researched the case after the trial and viewed evidence not presented then. After that, she felt even more comfortable that Bonds was guilty.

Besides Bonds, 10 people were convicted of various charges in BALCO cases. Six of them, including track star Marion Jones, were ensnared for lying to grand jurors, federal investigators or the court. Others, including Bonds' personal trainer Greg Anderson, pleaded guilty to steroid distribution charges.

The government's top BALCO investigator, Jeff Novitzky, declined to comment outside the courtroom after attending the hearing.

Bonds was one of two former baseball superstars to stand trial in doping-related cases this year. The trial of pitcher Roger Clemens was halted after just two days in July because prosecutors used inadmissible evidence. U.S. District Judge Reggie Walton has set a new trial for April 17.

Both men will face a different judgment day in 2013, when they'll be eligible for the Hall of Fame.

Howard Hughes

I am determined to elect a president of our choosing this year and one who will be deeply indebted, and who will recognize his indebtedness. Since I am willing to go beyond all limitations on this, I think we should be able to select a candidate and a party who knows the facts of political life....If we select Nixon, then he, I know for sure knows the facts of life." -- from handwritten memos by Howard Hughes, early in the 1968 presidential campaign

Best known for: aviator, movie producer, billionaire, hypochondriac.

Born: Howard Robard Hughes, Jr., December 24, 1905, in Houston.

Family: Mother: Allene (Gano) Hughes (died March 29, 1922); Father: Howard Robard Hughes, Sr., founder of Hughes Tool Company (died January 14, 1924); Uncle: father's brother Rupert, a writer for Samuel Goldwyn's movie studios; Wives: Houston socialite Ella Rice (married June 1, 1925, divorced in 1929); Actress Jean Peters (married 1957, divorced 1970); Hughes often dated Hollywood actresses in the 1930s, especially Katherine Hepburn.

Education: Hughes attended private school in Boston, where he was better at golf than classwork. He was attending Thacher School in California when his mother died. In California, Hughes spent time with his uncle, Rupert, who inspired his later interest in filmmaking. Hughes never graduated from high school. Nonetheless, his father arranged for him to sit in on classes at Cal Tech by donating money to the school. Afterward, Howard returned to Houston and enrolled at Rice Institute (now Rice University). Howard, Sr. died suddenly a few weeks after his son turned eighteen. Young Howard inherited much of the family estate and dropped out of Rice.

Profession: Family business: Uncle Rupert supervised Howard's part of the estate and interests in the Hughes Tool Company until he was twenty-one. Family quarrels led Howard to have company lawyers buy out his relatives. A Houston judge and friend of his late father's granted Howard legal adulthood on December 26, 1924, allowing him to take over the tool company.

Career: Movies: Following the summer of 1924, Howard and Ella moved to Hollywood to pursue Howard's interest in making movies. When his first attempt failed, he hired Noah Dietrich to head the movie subsidiary of his tool company, and Lewis Mileston as director. The new team won an academy award for Two Arabian Nights (1928). Their next film, Hell's Angels (1930), written and directed by Hughes and starring Jean Harlow, was the most expensive movie of its time at a cost of $3.8 million. This movie, about World War I aviators, lost $1.5 million at the box office but allowed Hughes to indulge his interest in flying. While shooting Hell's Angels, Hughes earned his pilot's license. Two later Hughes films tested the limits of public morality. Scarface (1932) was censored until Hughes sued to allow its release, and The Outlaw (1941) became controversial for its sexually explicit advertising and content, both featuring a sensational décolletage worn by a busty Jane Russell.  Inspired by the excitement over The Outlaw, Hughes later took a break from airplane fuselage design to create the half-cup bra, modelled of course by his Hollywood discovery, Jane Russell.  It was in the '30s that Hughes built the Texas Theater, the movie house in the Oak Cliff section of Dallas in which Lee Harvey Oswald was arrested in 1963. The closeness of both men to the CIA makes it all but certain that the Texas Theater would have become a clandestine meeting place for spies. Such use of movie theaters had long been a staple of espionage tradecraft, and other Hughes properties were put to similar use. Hughes owned the RKO movie studio from 1948 to 1955.

Aviation: In 1932, Hughes formed the Hughes Aircraft Company division of Hughes Tool. The company has pioneered many innovations in aerospace technology. But its origin was an attempt to finance the expensive conversion of a military plane into a racing plane. The next year, he achieved a false status by lobbying the Commerce Department to lower his pilot's license number from 4223 to 80. Charles Lindbergh's number was 69. The only real job Hughes ever had also came in 1933. He signed on as a co-pilot for American Airways. He applied under the name Charles W. Howard. The ruse was quickly discovered, however, and Hughes resigned. After entering and winning the 1934 All-America Air Meet in Miami, Hughes built and personally test-piloted the world's most advanced plane, the H-1. On September 13, 1935, he set a new speed record, taking the plane to 352 mph. Over the next two years, he set two new records with transcontinental flights. Between July 10 and 14, 1938, Hughes piloted a special Lockheed 14 with a crew of four on a flight around the world. He cut Lindbergh's New York to Paris record in half, and finished the trip in three days, nineteen hours and seventeen minutes. Houston's airport was renamed in his honor. As World War II approached, Hughes turned his full attention to building military aircraft. But his regard for secrecy and disregard for military protocol and standardized materials kept him from getting contracts. Henry J. Kaiser, the famous shipbuilder, helped Hughes get a contract to build three "flying boats" for $18 million in three months. Those terms proved impossible for Hughes. In the end, he produced only one of the planes after the war ended. It was flown only once on November 2, 1947, by Hughes himself. The public ridiculed him by calling the plane "The Spruce Goose." Another wartime contract for reconnaissance planes went similarly unfulfilled, and caused the deaths of two people when Hughes crashed during a test flight at Lake Mead. In 1947, the Senate investigated Hughes failure to meet his wartime contracts. In the 1950s and beyond, Hughes manufactured spy satellites.

Military-Industrial Complex: Throughout the 1950s, as the power of three entities grew -- the Hughes empire, organized crime, and the new Central Intelligence Agency -- it became all but impossible to distinguish between them. By the end of the decade, Hughes' chief of staff, Robert Maheu, had orchestrated the CIA's dirtiest secret -- plots to assassinate Cuban leader Fidel Castro with the help of two heads of organized crime. Vice President Richard Nixon was the White House action officer in the clandestine attempts to oust Castro. Zapata Off-Shore, the oil company owned by future CIA director and U.S. president George Bush after he split it off from Zapata Oil partner Hugh Liedtke in 1954, had a drilling rig on the Cay Sal Bank in 1958. These islands had been leased to Nixon supporter and CIA contractor Howard Hughes the previous year and were later used as a base for CIA raids on Cuba. Nixon lost the 1960 presidential election to John F. Kennedy largely because of a scandal over a never repaid $205,000 "loan" Nixon's brother received from Hughes. As attorney general, Robert Kennedy secretly investigated the Hughes-Nixon dealings.

After Bobby Kennedy's assassination in 1968, Maheu and Hughes hired long-time Kennedy advisor Larry O'Brien along with other political insiders to protect their interests in Washington. In 1953, Hughes had founded the Hughes Medical Institute in Delaware as his sole act of philanthropy. By turning over all of the stock of Hughes Aircraft Company to the institute, he made his billion-dollar-a-year weapons factory a tax-exempt charity. By 1969, that scam was about to be shut down by a Senate bill, which followed an investigation by fellow Texan Wright Patman, the powerful chairman of the House Banking Committee. But O'Brien lobbied his allies and got a loophole creating an exemption for "medical research organizations" like the Hughes Medical Institute.

President Nixon's downfall began when he ordered burglars to break into Larry O'Brien's office in 1972. At the time, O'Brien was both a Hughes employee and chairman of the Democratic National Committee, headquartered in the Watergate Hotel. The Watergate burglars happened to have been heavily involved in the covert anti-Castro operations (which Nixon oversaw as vice president). They were also deeply involved in the conspiracies which grew out of those operations; conspiracies which prevented any major political future for the Kennedy family, and led directly to Nixon's resurrection from political obscurity. The purpose of the break-in was never revealed because the Watergate scandal's investigations were sidetracked, likely on purpose, into a focus on multiple other high crimes by Nixon. Whatever the purpose of the break-in, Hughes was right in the middle of the major forces linking the conspiracies that resulted in the murders and character assassinations of the Kennedy brothers, and the Watergate scandal that toppled the Nixon administration.

During all of these political intrigues, arguments between Hughes and his employees continued to threaten military contracts and resulted in his firing his long-time associate Noah Dietrich in 1957. As a stockholder in Trans World Airways, Hughes lobbied for the airline's purchase of sixty-three jets in 1956. He sold his TWA stock in 1966 for $546 million when the company faced numerous lawsuits. That same year, Hughes moved to Las Vegas and began doing business there. Las Vegas organized crime interests were actively transferring casino ownership to frontmen with less tainted reputations.

Hughes took over Air West in 1970. (He was later indicted in the Air West takeover, but the case was dismissed.) Hughes was increasingly reclusive and decreasingly in control of his business dealings. Not even Nixon could contact him directly. Maheu's power was also declining. The CIA assassination plots had begun to leak to the press, requiring the government to distance itself from Maheu. Not only did he know too much, it was one of his associates, attorney Ed Morgan, who had leaked the story to columnist Jack Anderson. It was now Chester Davis, Raymond Holliday, and Bill Gay, the Hughes Tool Company executives who ran Hughes Nevada properties, who were contacted by the CIA when they wanted to build a CIA ship, the Glomar Explorer, to recover a sunken Soviet submarine.

In 1972, Hughes sold Hughes Tool Company's stock and renamed his company Summa Corporation, ending any remaining role in his business. His health deteriorated and his entourage of aids carted him to Panama, Canada, London and Acapulco. On June 5, 1974, a break-in occurred at Hughes' Romaine Street headquarters in Los Angeles. The theft of secret documents sent shockwaves through the U.S. intelligence community.

Death: Hughes died April 5, 1976, en route by private jet to a hospital in Houston. His drastically changed appearance and the fact that he had been seen by so few people for so long forced the Treasury Department to use fingerprints to identify his body. He left an estate estimated at $2 billion. Four hundred prospective heirs tried to inherit it but it eventually went to twenty-two cousins on both sides of his family. Texas, Nevada and California claimed inheritance-tax in disputes reviewed by the Supreme Court three times. Hughes Aircraft ended up in the hands of Hughes Medical Institute, which sold it to General Motors in 1985 for $5 billion. Four hotels and six casinos in Las Vegas and Reno remained with Summa Corporation.

Rapper Slim Dunkin slain in Atlanta studio

(AP)

ATLANTA - Atlanta police say the rapper Slim Dunkin was gunned down Friday evening in a city music studio as he prepared to record a video.

Police Maj. Keith Meadows said the performer, whose real name is Mario Hamilton, was fatally shot in the chest after getting into an argument with another individual.

"It appears the victim was scheduled to do a photo shoot," Meadows told The Associated Press. "Before the video shoot took place, it appears the victim and suspect got involved in a verbal altercation. We don't know what that altercation was about."

"The suspect produced a weapon, discharged that handgun one time, striking the victim in the chest," Meadows said.

The performer was transported to Grady Memorial Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Meadows said police have not been able to identify the shooter. He said 13 to 20 people were in the small office-type building at the time of the shooting, which took place around 5:30 p.m., but they were in different places.

"We've questioned a number of witnesses inside the recording studio at this time." Meadows said.

Police have not recovered the handgun that was used.

"Right now we're just trying to....identify who may have seen what, really just trying to put the pieces of the puzzle together," he said. "It seems everybody witnessed something very different. We're just trying to go back and make sense of everything."

Meadows said the victim was in his early 20s and resided in the Atlanta area.

Many fans were posting messages late Friday night on the rapper's Facebook page.

Rodney Atkins still singing at Colisee in Lewiston after arrest

LEWISTON — Saturday's nearly sold-out country music concert at the Colisee with headliner Rodney Atkins will go on as planned, despite an accusation by the singer's wife that he tried to smother her with a pillow.

The Associated Press reported Thursday that police arrested Atkins on Nov. 21 at his home outside Nashville. The 42-year-old was charged with domestic assault and later released on $2,500 bail.

On Thursday morning, as news of the arrest began spreading, Atkins' attorney released a statement calling the allegations of violence against Atkins' wife, Tammy Jo, "completely untrue."

Atkins is known for a string of hit country records, including "If You're Going Through Hell," "Watching You" and "Cleaning this Gun."

Bangor-based promoter Alex Gray, who is overseeing the Lewiston concert, which also stars Kellie Pickler, said he has talked with Atkins' agent and is assured that the 7 p.m. show will go on.

"We knew of this prior to it breaking," Gray said. "In this country, we are innocent until we are proven guilty."

Gray was also comforted by the fact that Atkins performed in Macy's Thanksgiving Day parade just three days after the arrest and sang on national TV.

"NBC knew," Gray said. "And if they felt it was of concern, they would have canceled."

Atkins was scheduled to perform Thursday night in Lowell, Mass., and Friday in Buffalo, N.Y.

The Lewiston show has proven popular, selling all but 400 of the Colisee's available 4,100 seats, Gray said. He expects any remaining tickets to sell on Saturday.

The Colisee received two calls Thursday morning from concert-goers checking to see if it was still on, box office manager Jim Mercier said.

"I'm getting more calls from people wanting to buy tickets," Mercier said. "A lot more."

If any fans want their money back after hearing the news, they will have to sell their tickets on their own, Gray said. Such sales are final in all but the rarest circumstances.

For example, a service member who buys a ticket and must leave for active duty before a show can get a refund, as can people with some medical problems, Gray said.

Any further rebate would be up to Atkins' management, and the singer is insisting his innocence.

In the statement released before noon Thursday, Atkins' lawyer described "an unfortunate verbal dispute" that was overheard by the couple's son, Elijah, 10.

"The police did not witness any assault because none occurred," wrote Atkins' lawyer, Nashville attorney Rose Palermo. "The police did not witness any violence between Mr. and Mrs. Atkins. It is entirely based on her word."

The singer has since filed for divorce.

Republican debate: Romney, Gingrich save fire for Obama

Republican presidential front-runners Newt Gingrich and Mitt Romney took aim at President Barack Obama, not each other, in their final TV debate before the first nominating event in Iowa.

While the two rivals played it safe, their conservative credentials were assailed by lower-tier candidates.

Mr Gingrich and Mr Romney joined five other White House hopefuls on stage.

The eventual Republican nominee will challenge Democratic President Barack Obama in next November's elections.

Thursday night's two-hour forum, hosted by Fox News in Sioux City, Iowa, also featured Texas Republican Ron Paul, Minnesota Congresswoman Michele Bachmann, Texas Governor Rick Perry, former Utah Governor Jon Huntsman and former Pennsylvania Senator Rick Santorum.
'Scam'

Mr Gingrich said in opening remarks: "I believe I can debate Barack Obama and I think in seven three-hour debates, Barack Obama will not have a leg to stand on in trying to defend a record that is terrible and an ideology that is radical."

Mr Romney lambasted President Obama for trying to "appease or accommodate the tyrants of the world", criticising his approach to retrieving a drone which recently went down in Iran.

"Foreign policy based on pretty please? You have to be kidding," Mr Romney said.

Meteor shower visible at peak despite moonlight

The 2011 Geminid meteor shower peaks on the night of Dec. 13-14, and despite the glare of a nearly-full moon, it might be a good show.

"Observers with clear skies could see as many as 40 Geminids per hour," predicts Bill Cooke of the NASA Meteoroid Environment Office.

"Our all-sky network of meteor cameras has captured several early Geminid fireballs," Cooke said. "They were so bright, we could see them despite the moonlight."

New York City-based Hasidic reggae superstar Matisyahu (ma-tis-YAH'-hoo) is on a new religious path, but it's unclear which one.

The Jewish singer shaved off his beard and posted the bare-faced photos Tuesday on Twitter. He says on his website he once felt the need for lots of religious rules so he wouldn't fall apart. Now he says he's reclaiming himself.

But it's unclear whether he's leaving Orthodoxy. He says he's still going to synagogue each day.

His spokeswoman says he isn't giving interviews.

Matisyahu was a musical curiosity who became a mainstream star after his 2004 debut, "Shake Off The Dust ... Arise." He sported the bushy beard, flat-brimmed black hat, black pants and white shirt worn by Hasidic men.

His biggest single, "King Without a Crown," was a crossover hit.

Lakers ship Lamar Odom to Mavericks

EL SEGUNDO, Calif. -- The Lakers have traded forward Lamar Odom and a second-round draft pick to the Dallas Mavericks for a first-round pick and an $8.9 million trade exception, capping Los Angeles' stunning 72-hour breakup with last season's Sixth Man of the Year.

The Lakers and Mavericks announced the deal Sunday night, three days after Odom learned Los Angeles was attempting to trade him in a megadeal for New Orleans superstar Chris Paul.

After the NBA blocked that trade, Odom declined to report to the Lakers' opening day of training camp on Friday. Odom then requested a trade, and the Lakers improbably swung a deal with the rival Mavericks, who swept Los Angeles out of the second round of last season's playoffs.

Playboy out early as nude Lohan photos leak

LOS ANGELES — Playboy is to release its January/February issue early after nude pictures of troubled starlet Lindsay Lohan leaked online, boss Hugh Hefner said.
The actress, who was reportedly paid nearly $1 million for the magazine spread, appears on the cover seated on a bright red Playboy bunny chair, only just protecting her modesty.
"Because of the interest & the Internet leak, we're releasing the Lindsay Lohan issue early," Hefner said on Twitter, adding: "Lindsay Lohan was the top search name on the Internet yesterday.
"Hot. Hot. Hot," tweeted Hefner, announcing that the next issue of the magazine will come out next week.
The leaked pictures show the curvy actress channeling Marilyn Monroe, flirting with the camera in a series of soft porn-style poses lying, kneeling or stretching herself voluptuously against red velvet drapery.
The actress had wanted $1 million for the Playboy spread and balked at an initial offer of $750,000 -- but Hefner eventually made an offer near enough to $1 million to entice her, celebrity news website TMZ reported.
Lohan -- once the promising child star of hit Disney movies "The Parent Trap" and "Freaky Friday" -- has a reputation for hard partying and has faced a series of legal tangles over the years.
Lohan was sentenced to 35 days of house detention in May as part of a plea bargain over the alleged theft of a $2,500 necklace from a jewelry shop near her home in Venice Beach.
Last month she spent five hours in prison after being sentenced to a 30-day stretch, for breaching probation on previous offences including a 2007 drug and drunk driving misdemeanor.

Source: Celtics couldn't sign Chris Paul

All of the chatter about Boston's interest in Chris Paul is a moot point because the All-Star point guard will not sign a long-term contract extension with the Celtics, according to a person close to the situation.Paul.                                                                                                                                          who will become a free agent after the coming season, essentially has veto power over any trade because no team will give up valuable assets for him without assurance that it can sign hi m for the next several years.

Boston would love to acquire Paul for a package built around point guard Rajon Rondo, and has been seeking a third trading partner to sweeten an offer to New Orleans. But Paul's reluctance to commit to Boston long-term should quickly put an end to the scenario.

While Boston is still an elite team, the Celtics' age -- Kevin Garnett, who is 35, and Ray Allen, 36, are in the final years of their contracts -- means they will be rebuilding next season. It's a major reason why Paul will not commit to them for the future.

There also has been speculation for the past few years that Paul would like to join Amare Stoudemire and Carmelo Anthony in New York, creating a Knicks super-team in the way the Miami Heat have been formed.

BILLY GRAHAM: The Preacher

William Franklin Graham Jr., known to all the world as Billy, is now 80 years old, and has been our leading religious revivalist for almost exactly 50 years, ever since his eight-week triumph in Los Angeles in the autumn of 1949. Indeed, for at least 40 years, Graham has been the Pope of Protestant America (if Protestant is still the right word). Graham's finest moment may have been when he appeared at President Bush's side, Bible in hand, as we commenced our war against Iraq in 1991. The great revivalist's presence symbolized that the gulf crusade was, if not Christian, at...

The Billy Graham Evangelistic Association says his condition remains stable.

In May, Graham spent five days in the hospital during a bout with pneumonia.

Graham rarely appears in public, but recently published his 30th book, in which he reflects on aging and mortality.

Grammys 2011: Kanye, Adele, Foo Fighters Lead Nominations

Kanye West has a chance to expand his already-huge collection of 14 Grammys and that he's the top nominee for the 54th Annual Grammy Awards. Kanye picked up a leading seven nominations, while Adele, Bruno Mars and Foo Fighters are tied with six each.

Strangely, Kanye is only nominated in one of Grammys' four main categories: Song of the Year, for "All of the Lights." Conversely, Adele, Bruno and Foo Fighters appear in three of the Grammy's biggest categories: Album, Record and Song of the Year. Adele has landed nominations for Record and Song of the Year for "Rolling in the Deep" and Album of the Year for 21. Bruno Mars got nods for Record and Song of the Year for "Grenade," and Album of the Year for Doo-Wops and Hooligans, while Foo Fighters got an Album of the Year nod for Wasting Light.

Meanwhile, Lil Wayne and electronic musician Skrillex each are up for five awards -- Skrillex, whose birth name is Sonny Moore, got a surprise nomination for Best New Artist. Also up for Best New Artist: The Band Perry, Nicki Minaj, singer/songwriter Justin Vernon, who records under the name Bon Iver [bonn ee-VAIR], and R&B star J. Cole. In addition, Rihanna, Radiohead, Bon Iver, Drake and Mumford & Sons each received four nods.

Among the most surprising nods were for Bon Iver's song "Holocene," a little-known track that somehow ended up in the Record and Song of the Year categories alongside hits like "Firework" and "Grenade." Another unexpected nominee in the Record and Song of the Year categories was Mumford & Sons' "The Cave."

The nominees for Album, Record and Song of the Year and Best New Artist were announced during a one-hour CBS special that featured performances by, among others, Lady Gaga, The Band Perry, Jason Aldean, Ludacris, Usher, Sugarland and, via satellite, Rihanna. One of the highlights came when Lady Gaga teamed up with Sugarland to perform the hit "You and I" -- Gaga and Sugarland's Jennifer Nettles had a ball trading verses and giving shout-outs to one another in the lyrics.

Gaga also opened the show by performing "Marry the Night" while wearing skeleton makeup and a blazer, black bra, panties and boots, while dancing on top of a heap of industrial garbage. Jason Aldean and Ludacris teamed up for Jason's hit "Dirt Road Anthem," and the Band Perry threw a bit of Tom Petty's "Free Fallin'" into their song "Independence." Usher paid tribute to late songwriters Jerry Lieber and Nickolas Ashford by singing their songs "Stand By Me" and "You're All I Need to Get By" respectively.

Notable Grammy snubs include Paul Simon, whose critically-acclaimed So Beautiful or So What album, which many predicted would score several nods, was ignored by Grammy voters. Former Album of the Year winner Taylor Swift received several nods, but not in any of the main categories. Except for her Best New Artist nod, Nicki Minaj was also ignored. Lady Antebellum, who swept the Grammys back in February, was relegated to the country categories.

Adele may be rolling deep with Grammy nominations

She likely won't get "21," but Adele is poised to take the biggest share of nods when the Grammy nominations are announced Wednesday nightThe British singer-songwriter has had a great year, thanks to her sophomore album, "21." The mournful album about a failed relationship is the year's best-selling disc with over 4.5 million copies sold. It has resulted in two smash singles, "Rolling in the Deep" and "Someone Like You."

The Recording Academy will likely add to Adele's achievements. She is a strong contender to get bids for album of the year and for song and/or record of the year for the searing groove "Rolling in the Deep."

But she's not the only favorite for top nominations. Taylor Swift's multiplatinum "Speak Now" is a possible contender for album of the year, as is Tony Bennett's "Duets II," which marked the 85-year-old's first album to debut at No. 1, making him the oldest artist to achieve that feat.

Lady Gaga's "Born This Way," which had the year's biggest debut with 1.1 million albums sold in its first week, could become her third straight disc to be nominated for album of the year. She was cited for "The Fame Monster" this year and for her debut, "The Fame," in 2010.

Then there's Kanye West. His "My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy" was one of the most highly regarded albums of 2010, and is eligible for a nomination for album of the year. So is his collaboration with Jay-Z for "Watch the Throne," another contender in the category.

A handful of the nominations are scheduled to be revealed during the fourth annual Grammy nominations concert special, to air live from the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles on CBS at 10 p.m. EST. Lady Gaga is slated to open and close the show.

Other performers include Katy Perry, who could get a record of the year nomination for her hit "Firework"; Rihanna, who could snag a few nominations, including album of the year for "Loud"; and The Band Perry, the country sibling trio likely to be up for best new artist. (Another strong contender for that category, Nicki Minaj, is scheduled to be a presenter on the special.)

The Band Perry, at rehearsals Tuesday night, were hopeful about getting a nomination.

"Our fingers are crossed. We kinda don't like to think too much about that kind of stuff on nights before nominations. We don't want to be a bad luck charm. I'll tell you what, it would be the cherry on top of a really wonderful year," said Kimberly Perry. "We actually just today got the news that we've been certified platinum. We've been high-fiving and celebrating all day. If we were honored to be nominated for best new artist, we would definitely be celebrating two days in a row.

2012 Grammy nominations: Adele, Kanye West, Bruno Mars, Foo Fighters lead the musical pack

In hard numbers, Kanye West earned the most nominations for this year’s Grammys (a whopping 7).

But in the categories that count — Album, Song and Record of the Year — it’s two other stars who have a chance to sweep.

To the surprise of no one, the year’s biggest selling artist, Adele, bagged nods in all the top slots: Song and Record for her smash “Rolling In The Deep,” and Album for her second CD, “21.”

The British singer earned six nods in all.

PHOTOS: SEE WHO WAS NOMINATED FOR THE MAJOR AWARDS

She’ll go head to head with a less obvious, or favored, candidate: Bruno Mars, who tied her tally with six bids, including the Record and Song slots for “Grenade,” and Album for his debut, “Doo-Wops and Hooligans.”

Both stars represent a resurgence of pure singing chops in an age of theatrics and gimmickry.

The Foo Fighters — seen by many as the last popular gasp for respected rock — also got six nods (though just one in a top category: Album of the Year).

Rapper Lil Wayne and the dance music producer Skrillex, each got five, all in lesser genre slots. Similarly, West’s large tally includes just one in a major category: Song of the Year for “All Of The Lights,” from his album “My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy.”

Lady Gaga, a star expected to have as high a profile as Adele, only has one chance to compete in a pivotal slot: Album for “Born This Way.”

Mike Leach is the perfect coach for Washington State

Flash back a mere four seasons ago. The 2008 Apple Cup in Pullman. Washington and Washington State came in with a combined one win in 21 games and this game, and these programs were the sources of derision around the nation. That is, if anybody was paying attention.

Football in the state was irrelevant. Programs that had produced Rose Bowl champions, national titles and dozens of All-Americans were the targets of one-liners.

And that day, the Apple Cup lived down to expectations. That day the Cougars took advantage of just enough Husky mistakes to beat Washington 16-13 in double overtime. And afterward, you had to wonder how long it would take for the Apple Cup to have meaning again.

Now we know.

With Washington State's hiring of former Texas Tech coach Mike Leach on Wednesday, football in this state once more became competitive.

"The Pirate" is in Pullman. Hiring Leach is a game changer, it's an Apple Cup changer. Rivalry week is alive again in Washington.

With this hire, Washington State emerges from the deep shadows of college football and back into the spotlight. The nation will pay attention to Leach. Cable pundits will be curious to see if he can win in Pullman like he did in Lubbock.

Guess what? He will.

Who knows? Maybe even ESPN's "Game Day" will show up in Pullman next year. Maybe Lee Corso will utter another expletive as he fumbles with a Husky head or a Cougar mask while making his Apple Cup prediction.

The game and now both programs have juice again.

Finally!

I know there are many Husky fans who wish Wazzu would be Apple Cup patsies in perpetuity. But for the rest of us, the idea of regularly having two bowl-going universities in the same state is exciting and intriguing.

And the athletic directors at both schools, Washington's Scott Woodward and WSU's Bill Moos, deserve credit for standing their ground and demanding revenue sharing among their Pac-12 brothers.

The money Washington State is getting from the conference's new television deal allowed Moos to be bold this week and hire exactly the right guy for the job.

But as he insinuated on Wednesday, now that he has written the check to hire a high-profile coach like Leach, he expects boosters to open their checkbooks and contribute to the tangible improvements planned for Martin Stadium and the football program.

Moos worked on this hire like a coach recruiting a blue-chip prospect. He traveled to Key West, Fla., to meet with Leach. He understood Leach was the exact fit for Pullman. This was his Cinderella hire.

Leach, 50, knows how to recruit to a small university town far away from the brightest lights. And he knows how to win there.

He is the perfect marriage of place and predicament. He coached in Lubbock, Texas. Ever been to Lubbock? It's Ellensburg without the hustle and bustle. (That's just a joke, Lubbock.) It's as windy as Candlestick at sunset and as exciting as Colfax on Monday nights.

But Leach made it a destination for football players. He brought the nation to Lubbock. History says he will do it in Pullman. He will fill Martin Stadium. He will cause a commotion.

In 10 seasons at Texas Tech, before his controversial firing, Leach's teams were 84-43. And the truth is football fans in Pullman will walk across wheat fields in bare feet in November to watch Washington State teams that are as good as Leach's were at Texas Tech.

Washington State is a unique place, with a unique fan base. It needs a creative coach with an innovative system. Leach proved he doesn't need a gaggle of four-star recruits to win.

Give him a bunch of guys who can run and catch, and his offense will find the space to make them effective. The pass-happy spread offense that Leach calls "Air Raid" will be ideal for the Cougars.

Imagine the excitement returning quarterbacks Jeff Tuel and Connor Halliday are feeling today. Eight of Leach's quarterbacks have led the nation in passing.

Think about the offense next year with Marquess Wilson and Bobby Ratliff and who knows how many other skittering wideouts and slotbacks running loose in the secondary.

If Moos is smart — and we know he is — he should immediately introduce Leach to Bothell's senior wide receiver, Trent Sewell, a big, sure-handed receiver who runs crisp routes. Sewell is close to signing with Wyoming, but wants to play at Washington State. He would be a good fit in Pullman.

Adele, Kanye West, Bruno Mars and Bon Iver Lead Grammy Nominees

The Grammy nominations were announced on Wednesday night, with British singer Adele, producer and pop singer Bruno Mars and Eau Claire, Wisconsin indie band Bon Iver - the surprise choice - each pulling in nominations in three of the four major categories that were revealed in a live telecast on CBS from the Staples Center in Los Angeles.

Adele - whose last name is Adkins - is up for a total of six Grammys, all stemming from her commercial blockbuster of a sophomore release, 21. But though he received only one nod in the major categories, Kanye West was the night's top nomination getter with seven.

And though the number of categories was reduced this year from 109 to 78 in an effort to keep the golden gramophones from beoming devaliued, it still seemed like there were plenty of nominations to go around. Other multiple nominees included Mars, with six, and Dave Grohl's well-respected rock band, the Foo Fighters, also with a half a dozen.  Brit art-rock band Radiohead, who were shut out of the major categories but still came away with five nominations from their album The King Of Limbs and song "Lotus Flower."

Lady Gaga kicked off the show with a goth-girl production of her overblown single "Marry The Night" that appeared to have been directed by Tim Burton,  and a moment she was snubbed when the Record of the Year nominees were announced. She was left off a list that included Adele's "Rolling In The Deep," Mumford & Sons "The Cave," Bruno Mars' "Grenade," Katy Perry's "Firework" and "Holocene" by Bon Iver, whose name was mispronounced by annoucer Niki Minaj.

The bad news for Gaga continued in the Song of the Year category, a songwriter's award. The nominee list was identical, with the exception of Kanye West's "All Of The Lights," from last year's My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy, thankfully pushing Perry's blaring "Firework" off the list.

Bon Iver, the band led by falsetto voiced sensitive man Justin Vernon (picured at left) who released its first album, For Emma, Forever Ago back in 2008, was also nominated in the best new artist category, along with R & B singer and rapper J Cole, rapper Minaj, country family act The Band Perry and Skrillex, the electronic dance music also known as Sonny Moore.

Gaga, who also closed the show with a duet of her piano power ballad "You and I" with Jennifer Nettles of the country-pop band Sugarland, finally got to hear her name called in the marquee album of the year category. Born This Way is going up against an uninspired lineup that includes the Foo Fighters' Wasted Light, Mars' Doo-Wop & Hooligans, Adele's Rolling in the Deep and Rihanna's Loud.

Hip-hop band The Roots are up for an award in the Best Traditional R & B category for "Surrender," their collaboration with old school soul singer Betty Wright on the album Betty Wright: The Movie. Philaelphia songwriter Marsha Ambrosius is nominated for both best R & B song and best R & B performance for "Far Away" from her album Late Nights & Early Mornings.

The collapsing of multiple categories into one such as the new Best Folk Album grouping, which used to be split into "Traditional" and "Contemporary" subsets, has squeezed lesser known folkies out to make way for indie rockers such as Fleet Foxes and big stars like Eddie Vedder, who are up against Steve Earle, the Civil Wars and Gillian Welch in the highly competitive category.

Lady Gaga, who got a total of three nominations, wasn't the only onne who did less well that expected. Country no-longer-teen queen Taylor Swift is up for only thre awards for her mega-selling Speak Now album, and 85 yar old Tony Bennett, expected to be a sentimental album of the year favoirite for his Duets II was left out of that competition.

The 54th annual Grammy Awards ceremony will be held at the Staples Center on Feb. 12.

First Look: Daniel Day Lewis Sporting His ‘Lincoln’ Beard

While most of us are still gearing up to see Steven Spielberg‘s next two movies, War Horse and The Adventures of Tintin, the filmmaker himself is working on the next thing. That next thing is Lincoln, which has been filming in Richmond, Virginia and stars Daniel Day Lewis as America’s legendary 16th President. Though the film has been shooting since October, casting is still ongoing and we have yet to see any paparazzi shots of the incredibly famous cast (among them Sally Field, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Tommy Lee Jones, John Hawkes, Hal Holbrook, James Spader, Tim Blake Nelson, David Strathairn, Jackie Earle Haley and David Oyelowo) because shooting was all indoors.

That’s about to change, though, and one intrepid college student snapped a photo of Day Lewis in a local restaurant. He’s not dressed as Honest Abe but that beard is unmistakable. Check out the image and learn more about the Lincoln shoot after the jump.

Adam Levine

Levine was born in Los Angeles, the son of Patsy Noah and Fred Levine.[2] His uncle is journalist and author Timothy Noah.[3] He has a brother, Michael, and a sister, Julia Milne.[4] When he was six, he made the winning shot of his local YMCA championship basketball game (on a team his father coached) with no time left on the clock. He has said that the incident changed his life and gave him the confidence to be successful.[5][6]

Levine attended French Woods Festival of the Performing Arts Camp (Hancock, NY) with best friend Jesse Carmichael, guitar player of the band known at that time as Kara's Flowers. He graduated from Brentwood School in 1997.

Levine has Jewish ancestry on both sides of his family (his father and maternal grandfather were Jewish), and considers himself Jewish, though according to The Jewish Chronicle, who interviewed Levine, he "has rejected formal religious practice for a more generalized, spiritual way of life". As a child, when asked by his father whether he wanted a bar mitzvah, Levine said no.[7]
Original band Kara's Flowers

Having met at Brentwood School in Los Angeles, the band released their first album entitled The Fourth World in 1997 as high school seniors. That same year the band appeared on an episode of Beverly Hills, 90210. The album had little success, and its only single, "Soap Disco", failed commercially. Disappointed with the results of their album, the band members went their separate ways.[8]

Levine and Carmichael left Los Angeles for New York. This was the first time the two Los Angeles natives were exposed to a completely different music scene, a cultural awakening for the young men.[9] On MTV News, in 2002, Levine said, "That's when I started waking up to the whole hip hop, R&B thing. We had friends named Chaos and shit. It was not Brentwood High."[10]
Maroon 5 and mainstream success

During this time, Levine worked a two-week stint as a waiter at Johnny Rockets.[11] After dropping out of Five Towns College, Levine and Jesse reunited with Mickey and Ryan, but added former Square guitarist, James Valentine in 2001. Renaming the band Maroon 5, Levine and his friends began to compile all of their new found musical influences into their music. While Levine was working as a writer's assistant on the television show "Judging Amy," he spent time writing the lyrics about his ex-girlfriend, Jane. Those lyrics became the album "Songs About Jane."[11]
Other work
Levine (right) with bandmate Jesse Carmichael in 2007

Levine has collaborated with various musical acts. In 2005, Levine was featured on the Ying Yang Twins song "Live Again". He appeared on Kanye West's Late Registration album, on the third single, "Heard 'Em Say".[12] He is also featured in the song "Wild Horses" on Alicia Keys' third album Alicia Keys: MTV Unplugged. Over the next year, he co-wrote the track "Say It Again" on Natasha Bedingfield's album N.B.. He also performed the background vocals on this song. Most recently, Levine offered his vocals on Gym Class Heroes' newest album in the song "Stereo Hearts".

Levine has made four notable comic appearances on television. During 2007, he appeared on the 33rd season premiere of Saturday Night Live in an SNL Digital Short called Iran So Far with Andy Samberg, Fred Armisen and Jake Gyllenhaal. Levine played himself while singing a humorous bridge to a "love song" for Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. In 2008, he appeared on Comedy Central's "Night Of Too Many Stars". Levine also had a cameo on Jimmy Kimmel Live for the night of stars and endorsed Barack Obama in the 2008 Presidential Election.

In October 2008, Levine collaborated with First Act to create the First Act 222 Guitar, fashioned to Levine's specifications. The guitar was made available for purchase at Target retail stores.[13]

Levine has stated in various interviews that he does not plan on continuing in Maroon 5 forever, and may stop after the tour for Maroon 5's third album.[14][15]

Levine made a guest appearance as himself on the season three finale of 30 Rock in the episode Kidney Now!.

In 2009, Levine recorded "Gotten", a song for Slash's first solo album Slash released in April 2010. "Gotten" was premiered at amazon.com on March 29, 2010.[16]

Levine is also featured as a singer for his band's song "She Will be Loved" in the music rhythm game Band Hero.

In February 2010, he was among approximately 80 musicians who sang on the charity-single remake of "We Are the World" called "We Are the World 25 for Haiti".

Levine is one of the contestant judges and coach mentors on the singing TV show, The Voice.[17] The winner, Javier Colon, was on Levine's team.

Levine's ex-girlfriend Jane is the muse behind the name of the band's debut album Songs About Jane. In a 2004 interview, he claimed that she had not contacted him despite the success of the album.[18] They have since made up, and by 2007, Levine referred to them as being "close friends".

Levine is a "car junkie", his favorite car being his 1971 Mercedes 280 SE 3.5 Cabriolet.[19]

In 2006, Levine broke his sternum while lifting weights, what he called "one of the most painful things I’ve ever experienced."[11] He began using spotters while lifting weights before giving up weightlifting completely when he began yoga in 2007.[20]

In September 2010, Levine said on the Howard Stern Show he had been dating Russian Sports Illustrated swimsuit and Victoria's Secret model Anne Vyalitsyna seriously for about eight months. The couple met when Maroon 5 performed at the 2010 Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue release party in Las Vegas.[21]

Levine stripped naked for testicular cancer awareness for a centerfold in Cosmopolitan UK's February 2011 issue.[22]

During Levine's teenage years, he was medically diagnosed with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder. In 2011, he launched an educational campaign to raise awareness of ADHD, entitled "Own It".[23]

James Arthur "Jim" Boeheim (play /ˈbeɪhaɪm/; born November 17, 1944) is the head coach of the men's basketball team at Syracuse University.[1][2][3] Boeheim has guided the Orange to eight Big East regular season championships, five Big East Tournament championships, and 28 NCAA Tournament appearances, including three appearances in the national title game. In those games, the Orange lost to Indiana in 1987 and Kentucky in 1996 before defeating Kansas in 2003. With 861 career wins, all at Syracuse, he currently stands in fifth place on the wins list of Men's NCAA Division I coaches, and is second among active coaches, behind only Mike Krzyzewski of Duke University. Boeheim has the third most career wins as head coach at any single school behind Dean Smith's 879 wins at North Carolina and Adolph Rupp's 876 wins at Kentucky. Rajon Rondo, left, and Chris Paul are the subject of trade rumors.

Rajon Rondo is on his way to Indiana ... unless Utah comes up with a way to land him.

Chris Paul is becoming a New York Knick ... unless the Clippers somehow get their hands on him.

Hold everything, this just in -- the two star point guards simply are going to switch teams ... unless everybody just ends up staying put.

With the NBA lockout finally coming to an end, there are enough trade rumors out there to make your head spin. Many of the early ones involve Rondo or Paul, sometimes both.

The Boston Celtics have been gauging trade interest in Rondo for more than a year, according to Yahoo! Sports. And Paul will be a free agent in 2012, meaning the New Orleans Hornets may want to get something for him while they can.

One of the most intriguing reports came Wednesday morning from ESPN's Chris Broussard, who said sources told him the Celtics are looking to swap Rondo for Paul.

But the Hornets aren't interested in a two-team trade involving the players, according to SI.com, so Celtics General Manager Danny Ainge is said to be looking to bring in a third team that could provide some younger players for New Orleans.

And then came this tweet from Broussard later Wednesday: "Let all the CP3-to-Boston chatter cease. CP will not sign long-term ext with Celtics, according to source close to situation."

See, your head is spinning, right? And that's just one of the scenarios involving Rondo and Paul. And they are just two of the players out there on the trading block.

Kourtney Mary[citation needed] Kardashian (born April 18, 1979)[1] is an American businesswoman, socialite, model, actress and reality television personality who gained fame as a cast member of Keeping Up with the Kardashians, Kourtney and Kim Take New York, and Kourtney and Khloé Take Miami.

She is the oldest child of Kris Jenner and defense attorney Robert Kardashian, the sister of socialites Khloé Kardashian, Kim Kardashian, and Rob Kardashian.

Kourtney Kardashian Pregnant With Second Child

Kourtney Kardashian, the eldest of the reality sisters, is pregnant with her second child, according to E! News and Us Weekly.

“Scott and I are so excited to announce that we are expecting our second child and are thrilled to be expanding the love in our family,” the 32–year-old mom told E! News in a statement on Wednesday.

Kourtney took a pregnancy roughly five weeks ago, according to Us Weekly, and woke up longtime beau Scott Disick around 7 AM to share the exciting news.

“Now I’m nine weeks along,” Kourtney told the mag. “You’re supposed to wait 12 weeks to tell people, but I feel confident.”

While Mason — the couple’s nearly 2-year-old son – came as a bit of a surprise to the couple of five years, Scott says their impending arrival wasn’t completely unplanned.

“It wasn’t like we weren’t trying,” he told the mag. “We kind of just said, ‘If it’s meant to be, it’ll be.’”

A rep for Kourtney was not immediately available for comment on the pregnancy news when contacted by Access Hollywood on Wednesday.
